Determined to provide a quality management education, IMS has overhauled MBA curriculum in the light of UGC Model Curriculum released in December 2001. This ensures the students how all the functional areas (e.g., accounting, economics, finance, information systems, management, marketing, and production) must work in harmony with each other.
- A Unique feature of the new curriculum is offering of Two Major Specializations where students have the choice to pursue studies in the areas of their interest and also empower themselves for seeking suitable jobs in the ever-changing world of business.

Students have a "real world experience" through on the job training, project work, and opportunity to 'shadow' an executive- The Institute has State-of-the-art IT-laboratory, modern educational gadgets, well-equipped class theatres and Institute's own library with latest volumes of books and video cassettes on management.

The Masters of Business Administration (M.B.A.) from our institute have excelled in the business world as professional managers and entrepreneurs. Keeping in view the global environment of business, we have re-engineered the management development processes in this institute. A large number of foreign students from the South Asian, Middle East and African countries have been trained in recent past. In the New Millennium, the institute is trying to reach out overseas students community, especially the wards of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in the countries of Europe and North America.
The institute is proud of some eminent personalities in the field of management education who were associated with its establishment and development, but we do not believe in hawking our rich tradition alone. We continue to keep our training and development effort up-to-date.
Excellent climate, state of the art infrastructural facilities and a beautiful location make learning in our institute a unique experience.

| INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ORIENTATION |
The LAN of the institute is presently connected through the BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd) with the Cyber World. The institute has its own website, www.imsshimla.org. The class rooms, faculty rooms and IT Lab is connected through a LAN. Internet facility is available to all students and teachers. The institute has latest technology for utilizing Internet facility including latest hardware and software. The courses have a strong IT content. The institute also offers IT specializations, besides, two compulsory courses on Management Information System (MIS) and Applications of computer in Business.. Further, The institute has strengthened IT- enabled electronic business management by a strategic alliance struck with Regional Computer Centre (DOEACC) a leading IT training establishment in this part of the country. |
| SHIMLA MANAGEMENT JOURNAL |
The institute publishes biannual management journal, “Shimla Management Journal”, which is a rich source of disseminating the management knowledge across the country. The paper/research articles contributors may send manuscripts not exceeding 20 pages and a abstract not exceeding 500 words along with soft copy (floppy diskette) to the director or editor, SMJ. The journal may be subscribed at the rate of Rs.50/- per issue, through DD/Cheque in favour of Director, IMS, H.P.University, Shimla. |
| Training Placement Cell |
In order to enhance the university industry interaction the placement cell has been formed at the institute. This cell works for arranging “On Job Training” and final placement of the students. |
| SHIMLA MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION |
Shimla Management Association, a group of alumni, functions within the institute so as to have an intense interaction with the Industry. The association looks after the training, placement, industrial tours, consultancy and liaison with old students as well as industrial world. The students of the institute may become the members of the association. The institute is the pioneering spirit behind the Shimla Chapter of All India Management Association. The University-Industry interaction has been intensified and the institute plans to work in close contact with H.P. Chapter of CII. |
| PROGRAMMES OFFERED : |
| (i) Doctoral programme
Aspirant candidates having three years of full time working experience or having qualified UGC-NET/JRF may register for PhD in management.
(ii) Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme
The MBA programme runs over four semesters. The curricula of programme have been designed with the objective of inculcating technical, human, analytical and conceptual skills among the students. The knowledge of different functional areas of management is further enriched by offering specializations in six fields, namely – Finance, Marketing, Human Resource, Production and Technology Management, Information Technology Management and International Business.
The course curricula of programme focuses on infusing problem-solving skills and dispositions among the students. They empower them to aptly scan the opportunities and challenges emerging in the business environment. Seminars, workshops, conferences and symposia are organized to expose students to the development in the macro environment and also to develop necessary analytical and interactional skills. All through the course, an inter-disciplinary approach is adopted in order to develop a multi-faceted personality.
For facilitating participative learning, the institute utilizes a number of techniques including case study, management games, role plays, group discussions, brain storming, simulations, quizzes, problem solving, etc. Through a spectrum of modern educational gadgets, learning is made a more pleasant and unforgettable experience. Besides, the judicious blend of internal and external evaluation in examination and during training makes this management development exercise a rewarding experience for the participants. |
| THE NUMBER OF SEATS: |
The institute admits 90 students for MBA course. Out of these 90 seats 60 seats are under subsidized category and 30 seats are under Self-financing/NRI/NRI Sponsored. |
| MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION |
Minimum eligibility for the course is any first bachelor degree of a university, established by law in India, at least with 50% marks (with 45% marks in the case of Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe candidates). The candidates who are appearing for their final examination of bachelor degree examination in April/ May, 2004 shall be allowed to appear in Management Aptitude Test (MAT), but the final selection is subject to their satisfying the above said eligibility condition. |
| AGE LIMIT |
Except for Self financing/ NRI/NRI Sponsored / Foreign National candidates, serving or retired defence personnel, the maximum age limit is 26 years on the 1st of July of the year concerned, provided that in case of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, the upper age limit will be raised by three years.
Provided that the Vice-Chancellor shall have the power to permit age relaxation for reason to be recorded in writing up to a maximum of three months. Provided further that age bar shall not apply in case of in-service candidates/ students and the State/ Government of India nominees.
The admission is based on the merit in competitive examination, which comprises of Application Rating, Management Aptitude Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview. Management Aptitude Test (MAT) will be of objective type consisting of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ).
The candidates for Self-financing/NRI/ NRI Sponsored/ Foreign National seats shall compete among themselves, so is the case with the subsidized seats. The MAT will be conducted at Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla and Dharamshala. The weightage assigned in computing merit is as follows: -
- 1 Application Rating [10 % of the percentage of marks obtained in each of the following examinations i.e. matriculation, +2 and graduation.] 30 Marks
- 2 Management Aptitude Test (M.A.T) 50 Marks.
- 3 Group Discussion 10 Marks.
- 4 Personal Interview 10 marks.

| H.P.UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT APTITUDE TEST (MAT) |
| ( i ) EXAMINATION CENTRES
The MAT will be conducted at Delhi, Shimla, Chandigarh and Dharamshala. The institute reserves the right to alter the date/centre of M.A.T.
( NOTE: - The centre will be created depending on the number of students’ applications ).
( ii ) COMPOSITION OF TEST
The MAT will have four sections of English Comprehension, Reasoning, Business Environment and Arithmetic Comprehension & Data Interpretation. The performance in MAT is the basis for screening the candidates for group discussion and personal interview. Normally, three candidates for each seat are called for group discussion and personal interview. |
| RESERVATION IN SUBSIDISED CATEGORY SEATS |
Admission to MBA programme except for seats reserved for Self-financing/ NRI/ NRI Sponsored and Foreign National candidates shall be subject to the following conditions:
-
15% and 7½ % seats shall be reserved for S.C. and S.T. candidates respectively, who have passed their qualifying examination from Himachal Pradesh University or Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishwavidayalaya, Palampur, Kangra, H.P. or Dr.Y.S.Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan,H.P.
- The remaining 77 ½ % seats shall be filled up as under: -
a. 25% of the seats for admission shall be open for all the candidates- irrespective of the Institution from where they have passed their qualifying- examination.
b. 75% of the seats shall be filled out of the candidates, who have passed their qualifying examination from Himachal Pradesh University or H.P. Krishi Vishwavidayalaya Palampur or Dr.Y.S.Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry subject to the following reservations:
- 5% of the seats shall be reserved for outstanding sportsmen/ women.
- 5% of the seats shall be reserved for outstanding cultural activists.
- 3% of the seats shall be reserved for physically handicapped candidates.
- Provided that the minimum eligibility for admission to a course in case of SC/ST will be 5% lower than the eligibility conditions for other students.
- Provided further that one seat (Supernumerary) shall be reserved for the serving/ retired defence service personnel, if they fulfil the minimum eligibility conditions prescribed for admission.

Provided further that the candidates seeking admission to MBA course, having passed +2 or equivalent examination from the institution located within the territorial jurisdiction of Himachal Pradesh, with a degree in Engineering from an Institution outside the state or other degree which is not available in the H.P. University shall also be considered under categories provided in clause (A) and (B) above.
The roster of admission, showing reservations of various categories shall be used as per H.P. University rules (Which was made applicable from the session 1995-96).
The Application Form duly filled up is required to be submitted to the office of Director, IMS, H.P. University, Shimla-171005, along with the following:
I. Crossed Indian Postal Orders/Bank Draft of Rs.100/- (Rs.25/- in case of SC/ST candidates) in case of Indian Nationals, and US $10 (Ten Dollars) in case of Foreign Nationals, payable to the Director, IMS, H.P. University, Shimla-171005.
II. The Admit Card along with the two enclosed envelopes bearing stamps of Rs. 25/- (registered letter) and Rs 6/- each or as per the norms of postal services. In case of foreign addressee, stamps of required amount should be affixed by the applicant. |

COMPUTER FEE |
Computer fee will be charged @ Rs.3000/- per academic session, i.e. Rs.1500/- in the 1st Semester to be paid at the time of admission and Rs.1500/- at the time of seeking admission (continuation) in 3rd Semester by the office of the institute. |
| SELF-FINANCING ADMISSIONS |
The candidate admitted under NRI / Self-Financing / NRI Sponsored/Foreign Nationals scheme shall be charged a consolidated training fee of US $ 2000 (Two thousand dollars) per annum or its equivalent in Indian Currency (in Rupees) as on 01-07-2004, in addition to the fees charged from the student admitted against subsidized seat. These dues have to be deposited at the time of admission to the First and Third Semesters through a bank draft in the name of Director, I.M.S., H.P. University, Shimla-171005. This will not cover boarding, lodging, medical, travel and other personal expenses.
( Note: The rate of US$ at the time of admission will be applicable for whole session 2004-06. )
The institute reserves the right to decide the number of seats for the above said category of students, depending upon the availability of facilities in the institute. |
| DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE FOR NRI/NRI SPONSORED AND FOREIGN NATIONALS |
In support of eligibility, for being considered for admission under this scheme, candidate shall be required to submit, along with the Application Form any one of the following documents as may be applicable for the category of his/ her candidature :-
- Proof of nationality in case of Foreign Nationals.
- Proof of his/ her status, in case of NRI. For this purpose, either of the following documents shall be considered as a proper proof:
- Copy of the Non-Resident Card/ Employment Card issued by the Employer.
- Photocopy of the Immigration/ Employment Visa entry on the passport along with details of the passport.
- Certificate issued by the Indian Embassy/ High Commission in the country where NRI is residing.
- Photocopy of the latest Assessment Order of the Income Tax Authorities either in India or the country of employment filed in the status of Non-Resident Indian.
- Certificate of Sponsorship from a NRI in case of sponsored candidate, along with proof of NRI status of the sponsorer as required under Para (2) above.
( NOTE: The institute reserves the right to fill up any vacant seats in the self-financing category. If sufficient number of candidates do not qualify for admission on the basis of competitive examination. Seats would be filed on the basis of academic performance in the qualifying examination. | RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES |
University hostels accommodate some students on the basis of merit, depending upon the number of vacancies in the hostel. The residential arrangement for the rest is the responsibility of candidates themselves.
