INTRODUCTION

Nineteen Eighty Nine heralded an unprecedented development in tourism education as the Indian Institute of Tourism & Travel Management pioneered, a unique Network Management with over 25 Indian universities and institutions to work for a broader base in university education through inclusion of tourism education courses among the formal academic disciplines.It was in the year 1991, the Institute of Vocational Studies started a two year post graduate-degree course in tourism Administration in Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.

OBJECTIVES

Its purpose is to provide academic opportuinities to graduates for successful careers in Management services.   Its objective is to strive for total professionalisation of human resources engaged in the business of tourism through regular academic course at post graduate level.   Its research programme is oriented towards remaining Contemporary in term of knowledge and expertise through practical application and theoretical knowledge shared with the students and the industry.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: To offer a comprehensive programme which provided knowledge and develops analyticl and communication skills.

PUBLIC SERVICE EXCELLENCE:  To share expertise with members of the academic community, Hospitality Industry and the society.

EXPOSURE
To develop analytical , coneptual and Managerial skills our students have been exposed to following activities such as:
PROJECTS:
Conducting a feasibility study of different resorts.
Identifying the tourism potential of Himachal Pradesh.
Scope of development of HIGHWAY TOURISM on National Highway 22 & State Highway 21.
Conducting a survey for the development of Shimla & peripheral tourism destination.
NATIONAL TOURISM QUIZ:

Every year on the occasion of 'WORLD TOURISM DAY' (27th Sept.) our students organise "NATIONAL TOURISM QUIZ". Teams from various Universities & other leading Institutes of the Country take part in this mega event.

Workshops are a regular feature as a part of the celebrations of World Tourism Day. The following workshops have been organised till-now-
- Human Resources Management in tourism industry.
- Present status of tourism & challenges ahead.
- Professionals in tourism industry. 

SEMINARS:

Seminars are a regular feature of the department.   Every week a seminar is   organised by the students in which faculty members, students and tourism professions participate and exchange their views on the various topics relating to tourism.  The seminars deal with current tourism topics relating to tourism. The seminars deal with current tourism issues as:
- Domestic Vs International Tourism.
- Role of Multi - National Companies in Tourism Industry.

Department of Tourism and Department of Science & Technology of Himachal Pradesh imparts practical experience to our students from time to time.  Our students have participated in Workshop attended by Ambassadors of different countries. The institute has been working with the tourism industry, the education system and government departments to identify their needs for professional expertise and has developed training courses reflecting a high degree of educational creativity.  The meshing of the requirements of challenges posed by the far reaching changes, sophisticated intense competition with the growing variety of career opportunities in the field of tourism and travel forms the educational framework of the course offered by the Institute.  The placements of our MTA students are excellent.   Some of our students are working in reputed travel agencies and Hotels in India and Nepal.

The course in Travel and Tourism is not just about today -  it is about tomorrow.  It is aimed at developing personal and professional skills as a firm foundation for a career in diverse and rapidly expanding industry.  The course would offer tourism industry employers unique opportunities to be in on the ground floor of professional education and training of the people who will be tomorrow's work force and eventually lead tomorrow's industry.
